Abstract: Context: * The city of Oaxaca is a melting pot of people with different linguistic backgrounds: Locals, newcomers from rural areas, northamerican expats, returned migrants who present different views, uses and practices about their languages. * Even though Spanish appears to be the lingua franca, there are small spaces in which other codes are stronger, such as small diasporas (markets and street vendors spaces) and in some families. * Some Laws and language policies that were implemented in 20 years, such as “Ley General de Derechos Linguisticos de los Pueblos Indigenas” (LGDLPO, 2003) and the National Program of English for Basic Education (PNIEB,2007) may have had some consequences in language use in the city. Objectives and goals of this thesis: * To make an account of how people in the city of Oaxaca understand, express and practice their linguistic repertoire and the others’. * To make an analysis of the implications of the coexistence of these different codes under the scope of the superdiversity (Bloomaert and Rampton, 2011) * To understand and register how “modern” social phenomena such as migration, globalization, language policies, etc., are shaping the linguistic environment in this city.
