dc.description.abstractEste texto plantea cómo, entre 1520 y 1555, la imagen del indio americano fue moldeada por autores españoles en escritos, crónicas civiles y de evangelización, para transformarlo de bárbaro a cristiano en potencia. El trabajo argumenta que tal transformación respondió tanto a los conflictos de la monarquía católica con las potencias europeas y del medio oriente, como a la importancia que los “indios” representaron para el destino español. Subraya el peso de los intereses en la conformación de dicha imagen a fin de advertir la tergiversación de la realidad histórica y cultural de las comunidades americanas que ello significó. Además, insiste en lo absurdo que resulta tomar las fuentes de esta época de primera mano textual o acríticamente.es_MX

dc.description.abstractEnglishThis text states how between 1520 and 1555 the image of the American Indian was shaped by Spanish authors in writings, civil chronicles and texts of evangelization, to transform it from a barbarian into a potential Christian. The work argues that such a transformation responded as much to the conflicts of the Catholic monarchy with the European and Middle Eastern powers, as to the importance that the “Indians” represented for the destiny of Spain. It underlines the weight of real and ecclesiastical interests, as well as the disputes in the conformation of this image in order to warn the distortion of the historical and cultural reality of the American communities that this meant. This text also insists how absurd it is to take the first-hand sources from this epoch textually or uncritically.en
