dc.description.abstractEn el presente texto se aborda el discurso médico, plasmado en la Gaceta Médica de México entre 1876 y 1889, que patologizó la masturbación masculina y que pretendía, por un lado, erradicar la búsqueda solitaria de placer por considerar que afectaba negativamente el cuerpo del sujeto practicante y que, incluso, podía conducirlo hasta la muerte; por otro lado, la masturbación era vista socialmente como una amenaza moral que conducía a la degradación humana, y correspondía al médico curar al sujeto y evitar el caos que resultaba de dicha práctica, ya que afectaba directamente los intereses del liberalismo desarrollista decimonónico de la nación mexicana.es_MX

dc.description.abstractEnglishThe present text deals with the medical discourse, as set out in Gaceta Médica de México between 1876 and 1889, which pathologised male masturbation and which sought, on the one hand, to eradicate the solitary pursuit of pleasure on the grounds that it negatively affected the body of the practitioner and could even lead to death; on the other hand, masturbation was seen socially as a moral threat that led to human degradation, and it was up to the doctor to cure the subject and avoid the chaos that resulted from this practice, as it directly affected the interests of the nineteenth-century developmental liberalism of the Mexican nation.en
